One (a = a) expresses an a priori truth, while the other (a = b) often extends or adds to our knowledge. His account of sense and reference explains how this happens. Descartes is often held to be responsible for the beginnings of modern philosophy, and similarly Frege is held responsible for the linguistic turn. One of his most influential papers, ‘On Sense and Reference’ is the subject of our next discussion, it can be found here: 2014-07-11 · Frege vs. Locke Reference/sense Idea Reference is an object perceivable by the senses An internal image arising from the memories of sense impressions which I have had and acts, both internal and external which I have performed Not saturated with feelings Saturated with feelings; The clarity of its separate parts remains the same The clarity of its separate parts varies and oscillates Sign’s sense: common property of many; not part of a mode of the individual mind (mankind has a 2 The sense and reference of declarative sentences Frege has distinguished between two levels of meaning: sense and reference. He also thinks that declarative sentences express what he calls thoughts. Now the question is whether that thought is the sense or the reference of a sentence.

Frege’s invention of modern predicate logic, in his earlier work Begriffsschrift (1879), formalizes language and provides the platform from which he Frege and the logic of sense and reference / by Kevin Klement. p. cm — (Studies in philosophy) Includes bibliographical references and index ISBN 0-415-93790-6 1. 17 To be precise, Frege replaces the notion of an extension with that of a value-range, but this does not affect the point at stake. 18 For an extensive discussion of Russell’s argument see Makin 22

Frege’s response to this objection is to distinguish between the direct sense and the indirect sense of a sentence. The direct sense of a sentence is the stand alone meaning of the sentence, i.e, the proposition; thus its reference is its truth value. The indirect sense of a sentence is its meaning to the subject of the main clause (= thought). According to Frege, the Reference Theory of Meaning is not true. The meaning of an expression has to be something more than the object the expression refers to.

The task that Frege posed for himself in B egriffsschrift he sets out in the sub-title of the book; it is to pr esent “a formula language, modeled upon that of arithmetic.” The notation that Frege develops in B egriff-sschrift, his “conceptual notation,” carried through this project as a for- 2012-03-30 The sense of a name, Frege tells us, is not just a mode of presentation, but a mode of presenting a definite object. That is, it is the job of the sense of a name to fix on a certain object as the denotation of the name. So, for example, with the triangle example on pp. 217-218: the sense of the name On sense and reference GOTTLOB FREGE [As reprinted in A.W. Moore (ed.) Meaning and Reference.Oxford: Oxford University Press.] Equality [1] gives rise to challenging questions which are not altogether easy to answer. Is it a relation? A relation between objects, or … Gottlob Frege's Über Sinn und Bedeutung (`On Sense and Reference'), has come to be seen, in the century since its publication in 1892, as one of the seminal texts of analytic philosophy.
In the years 1891–1892, Frege published three of his most well-known papers, ‘Function and Concept’ (1891), ‘On Sense and Reference’ (1892a), and ‘On Concept and Object’ (1892b). Immediately after that, in 1893, he published the first volume of the technical work previously mentioned, Grundgesetze der Arithmetik. In “On Sense and Reference” Frege approaches the topic of how language connects with the world, beginning with the potent observation that reference is not the only way language has meaning: Statements of identity such as A = A are established a priori, yet A = B has a different cognitive value precisely because it is not.

The German mathematician and philosopher, Gottlob Frege, is widely regarded as the father of analytic philosophy. His work has shaped everything which has been written in the philosophy of language in the analytic tradition. I think there are two principal reasons for this.
